Position Title: Junior Legal Counsel – International Affairs & Data Privacy

Role Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join the Malta Gaming Authority ('MGA', 'Authority') as a Junior Legal Counsel within the International Affairs and Data Privacy team. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the Authority’s international affairs portfolio, while also gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of data protection matters. The position requires someone who is eager to take on challenges, demonstrate strong analytical skills, and contribute to the Authority’s strategic initiatives.
You will support the team by conducting research and monitoring international developments, while maintaining active engagement with key stakeholders – including industry players, local and international regulators, and government entities.
You will also assist with work related to data privacy by playing a key role in the Authority’s data protection compliance efforts. This includes collaborating closely with various teams to put effective processes in place, carrying out risk assessments, and ensuring that the Authority’s data handling practices consistently align with established best practices.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• To scan the horizon for industry developments across the globe that are of interest to Malta and the gaming industry in general;
• To conduct and research into assigned areas of gambling regulation, international developments or any other matter as deemed relevant;
• To collaborate closely with international gambling regulators, industry players, Government authorities and departments, including those representing Malta outside our shores, and to maintain constant channels of communication;
• To keep abreast with European Union regulations, directives and initiatives and provide the internal stakeholders with the required support regarding the interpretation of the relevant instruments, particularly with regard to the effect that such instruments may have on the local industry;
• To represent the MGA in international fora including conferences, exposition centres as well as any related meetings locally or overseas as required;
• To conduct research on applicable data protection requirements and provide informed guidance on data protection matters;
• To conduct contract reviews by negotiation and drafting contractual wording on data protection requirements with various stakeholders;
• To prepare Data Protection Impact Assessments as needed;
• To regularly motor developments in the data protection field, including researching national and European case-law and analysing the impact on the Authority; and
• To deliver training and awareness raising sessions on the data protection requirements applicable to the Authority, ensuring that employees understand their obligations and adopt sound data protection practices.
Technical/Professional Expertise
• In possession of a degree in law (MQF level 6 or equivalent);
• Having previously worked or trained in other legal, or diplomatic roles shall be considered an asset;
• Knowledge of the laws and regulations governing gambling and/or data protection laws in Malta shall be considered an asset;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Self-starter with a high degree of accountability and pro-active work attitude;
• Team player with strong ability to contribute positively to a team environment;
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced and changing environment.
